John Debenham is Professor Emeritus at the University of
Technology, Sydney. John has a long standing research interest in the design
of knowledge-based systems. During 1997 he developed an interest in
multi-agent systems. He presently retains both of these
interests.
The focus of his research on knowledge-based systems has been on
the preservation of system integrity. This has been achieved by
building a maintenance mechanism into the conceptual design, this
mechanism incorporates a comprehensive suite of constraints for
knowledge. A range of techniques have been developed that may be used
to simplify the structure of this maintenance mechanism. Much of this
work is summarised in the research monograph "Knowledge
Engineering: Unifying Knowledge Base and Database Design" that
was published with Springer-Verlag in 1998.
In 1997 John developed an interest in management systems for
emergent process; in particular, in the use of intelligent
multi-agent architectures. During 1999 and 2000 he has been
particularly interested in the design of multi-agent process
management systems. During the period 1998 to 2002 he published
extensively on multiagent systems for managing complex business
processes. During the period 2002 to 2006 John’s work is on
eNegotiation and argumentation agents. He is particularly
interested in the design of agents that can exploit the
information-rich environment of electronic markets. In
collaboration with Carles Sierra (IIIA, Barcelona) John is pioneering
the foundations of information-based agency. John is a member of
the eMarkets Research Group in the Faculty of IT. He is presently
first-named principal investigator on an ARC Discovery Grant and an ARC
Linkage Grant (with Alcatel Australia) and the second-named principal
investigator on a second ARC Discovery Grant.
